Let’s talk about FAST Racing NEO and its DLC pack

Q: FAST Racing NEO was met with excitement from both critics and gamers alike (even some of the most skeptic reviewers liked it) and I would guess that it also was a pretty remarkable commercial success for your studio. Did you expect a similar response during the development or were you caught off guard by a success that overcame your own expectations?

A: We were of course very happy about the exceptional feedback from gamers and reviewers. We knew that FAST Racing NEO was a great game but you always needs the right timing and some luck too. In the end everything came together perfectly and the success was what we expected. Otherwise we would have not worked three years on this game.

Q: On September 30th you will launch the “NEO FUTURE PACK” DLC (which will add 8 new tracks to your game) and the retail edition of FAST Racing NEO, that will include these additional content. Could you tell us more about it? Could you specifically discuss the mindset you approached the development of this DLC with and how will it enrich the game? Will it offer significantly different experiences from what the game already provides to the players?

A: When we launched the game we didn’t plan any DLC. We only planned improving the game and adding missing features for free. Anyway, when we got the opportunity for releasing the game again on disc we thought it would be great to have more and fresh content for the new players. We had many ideas left for cool tracks and were happy to revisit the game to add more content and to improve the experience. We also took the chance to enhance our rendering code again to have smoother visuals on screen.

The future of FAST Racing NEO and Shin’en

Q: Can you tell us if you are thinking about developing other FAST Racing NEO DLCs in the near (or not) future?

A: We never did any DLC before so we first want to see how many people are interested in such additions before we make any further plans.

Q: What’s next for FAST Racing NEO since the only console it is playable on right now is supposedly going to be discontinued pretty soon? Could you decide to develop ports of this game for other platforms, like Nintendo’s very own NX (considering how much you feel close to this brand)? Or do you think that the game is better off left on the Wii U?

A: For the Wii U we think FAST + DLC is just perfect and certainly one of the best games you could get there. If we would do another FAST game on a new platform we would not simply do a port. We would try to look at the platform to see what could be done beyond the current game.

Q: Talking about what’s next for the FAST Racing series, as of now do you think that a third game in this franchise could happen sooner or later, or do you feel like you have already reached the peak of possibilities this concept provided, at least for now?

A: For Wii U we feel like having reached some kind of peak. We don’t think it can get much better. When looking back at our history we often revisited our previous games when we had new ideas to take them to a new level.

Q: You may already know that there are a lot of Nintendo fans that would like to see a new game in the F-Zero franchise made by you. If Nintendo asked you to develop a new F-Zero, would you accept? In more general terms, would you like to work closely with Nintendo in the same way some other third party developers did in order to develop games like Punch-Out!! and Luigi’s Mansion 2? Some fans also think that you definitely should.

A: Many fans asked these questions in the past. We have a great relationship with Nintendo and everything is possible, but we still have so many things we want to explore on our own. If you look at our track record then you will notice there are many genres and styles. We love testing out new things. Since FAST was released we already created a couple of new game prototypes. We want to chart new territory in the land of Shin’en!
